We Love These Fall Outfits Inspired By 'Gilmore Girls'
Fall is here. That means it’s time for “Gilmore Girls” and, of course, the many amazing fall outfits Rory and Lorelai wore.
If there’s ever a time to travel to Stars Hollow and visit the fast-talking, coffee-drinking Lorelai and Rory and the town’s many eccentric but loveable residents, it’s fall. The cult favorite television show Gilmore Girls is chalk full of back to school storylines and even has an Autumn Festival. What could be more perfect?
The show is set in an idyllic Connecticut town, and Amy Sherman-Palladino’s expert writing manages to make mundane events completely captivating. The small town with a Hallmark-esque atmosphere makes it ideal for cozy, fall binge watching. And that’s not even counting all of Rory’s and Lorelai’s amazing fall outfits.
Gilmore Girls may not be thought of for its fashion the way television shows Gossip Girl or Sex in the City are, but that’s part of what makes it such applicable inspiration. Its more understated and typical preppy American aesthetic makes it really wearable. That is, outside of the more eccentric outfits donned by the elder Gilmore girl, Lorelai. Fans will remember the famous tie dye shirt, cowboy boots, coat combination she wore on Rory’s first day at Chilton. Aside from a few other questionable outfits (an unavoidable product of Y2K fashion), the show’s costume designer Brenda Maben created some amazing outfits that work for everyday life.
With so many great outfits to choose from, it was hard to pick favorites. But I’ve listed some of my favorites so you can recreate them this season.
Fur Coats for the Win
Lorelai and Rory might both look unhappy in this photo, but one thing I’m not unhappy about is Lorelai’s outfit. Even if you can’t sit on a bench in Stars Hollow, a fun coat is sure to brighten up your day.
Sam Edelman Hooded Faux Shearling Teddy Coat
This teddy bear style coat is a perfect 2o21 version of Lorelai’s. Plus, it’s super cozy and warm.
Forever 21 Cropped Henley Top
This long sleeve henley in a pretty shade of pink is similar to Lorelai’s top, and it’s just $14.99.
Utility Jackets Are Fashion
Something I’ve always loved about the fashion on the show is the simplicity of the outfits. They aren’t ever out of reach or costume-like. Rory had her staple utility jacket that she’d wear with a basic henley top. And guess what, it’s simple, but it’s also a really great outfit for fall.
L.L. Bean Women’s Waffle Knit Henley
This L.L. Bean henley is super classic and a lot like a top you would see Rory wear. Lots of basics make a great wardrobe.
Hollister Corduroy Shirt Jacket
This is a great lightweight jacket for fall like Rory’s staple choice throughout the early seasons of the show.
Movie Night Casual
Who doesn’t want to have a fall movie night? After all, what would Lorelai and Rory do? So break out the junk food (for an authentic Gilmore Girls experience it must really be ALL the junk food), and while you do, take a few style tips from Lorelai with a cute sweater and t-shirt paired with statement sneakers. And pro tip from Rory: a movie night calls for a comfy headband.
New Balance Women’s 574 in Garnet with Henna
Shop these cute New Balance sneakers to pair with your own fun sweater.
Old Navy Waffle-Textured Headband for Women
This blue headband is perfect for doing a Rory Gilmore inspired hairdo.
All about Layers
Fall fashion is all about layers, and Rory’s masters this art. A cute knit top with a jacket layered over it will make an ideal fall outfit every time. You get bonus points if you have a cute boyfriend like Jess to walk around with while you show off your outfit.
Free People Delilah Top
This cute top from Free People is fitted, which makes it perfect for layering under any of your jackets that your bulkier sweaters don’t work under.
L.L. Bean Women’s Classic Utility Jacket in Black Plum
How darling is this burgundy utility jacket? The color is super rich and super fitting for fall.
An Impression Making Coat
A red coat might have you thinking of Christmas, but it’s actually an amazing choice for fall, especially if you pair it with rich, warm tones like the ones in Rory’s dress. If you need to make a good impression on family (think your new mother-in-law) for Thanksgiving, a coat like this is sure to do the trick.
Gap Three-Quarter Sleeve Midi Dress in Plum Large Floral
A midi-length autumnal dress pairs perfectly with a red coat like Rory’s for a dressy fall outfit.
Lauren Ralph Lauren Walker Coat
This coat makes me think of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Fittingly, it’s sold at Macy’s. If you’re looking for a new coat this season, consider picking this one up. But hurry, because there’s currently a big discount!
Chic and Professional
Lorelai might be known for her funky outfits, but every now and again she dresses professionally for her job at the Independence Inn. If you work in an office, this more work appropriate outfit is a great choice for fall.
Land’s End Women’s Relaxed Cotton Long Sleeve Mock Turtleneck in Brown
To recreate Lorelai’s outfit you’re going to need a basic brown turtleneck, like this one that’s currently on sale at Land’s End.
Pendleton Seasonless Wool Pencil Skirt
Every woman needs a simple pencil skirt in her closet, and this one from Pendleton will last you years.
ASOS Reclaimed Vintage Inspired Leather Dad Blazer in Black
The leather blazer is what really makes the outfit. One that’s a bit oversized is great because you’ll be able to layer it over chunky sweaters.
Corduroy Dreams
This funkier outfit really shows off Lorelai’s personality and brings in some of that famous (or infamous) Y2K fashion. The bohemian blouse is the perfect match for her corduroy pants, which, by the way, will go with all your fall sweaters.
J.Crew Vintage Slim-Straight Corduroy Pant
I happen to own some corduroy pants from J.Crew and I think they're amazing, so I’d definitely recommend this pair, which is currently on sale.
Collegiate Style
We may not all be the editor of the Yale Daily News, but at least we can feel a bit collegiate with this preppy ensemble.
Brooks Brothers V-Neck Tennis Sweater
This classic tennis sweater from iconic retailer Brooks Brothers is perfect for recreating Rory’s look.
J. Crew Wool Blend Mini Skirt in Houndstooth
You can’t go wrong having a classic patterned skirt like houndstooth in your wardrobe. Whether you wear it to run errands, go to work, or out to a quick lunch with friends, it will have your back. Just remember: cute tights underneath are a must.
Closing Thoughts
Nobody has mastered fall style quite like Lorelai and Rory. Since we can’t all live in Stars Hollow, we’ll just have to settle for dressing like we do instead.
