We're often in our own echo chamber of popular opinions, politics, and viral memes. After all, our culture highly depends on consuming, which includes our media and entertainment. So, how do people from different parts of the world view us? A YouTuber (@ZOTyoutube) and TikToker travels to different countries to ask Europeans a question that some U.S. citizens are curious about: "What do you think about Americans?"

Let's take a look at what they have to say.

Americans Are Too Sensitive

In one video that gained 2.4 million views, one young woman shared her thoughts on the U.S.A. "I don't like America that much," she laughs. "I think that people there – that might sound controversial – but I think people there are very, uh, sensitive nowadays of every topic." The young woman continues, "That kind of prevents the freedom of speech, like, you're not able to say anything and people already jump on you and start insulting you."

She then brings up cultural appropriation, an ongoing "social issue" that seems be a big deal to young Americans. "They don't really appreciate actually cultures mingling, if that makes sense,” she adds. “They call it 'cultural appropriation' and I don't get that, because I love many cultures. And if foreigner person went to my country, wore my traditional clothes, and did everything I do traditionally here, I would be really happy about it."

Many of the comments concur. "Well I actually agree with her and I'm American," one user says.

Another one says, "This is what a person looks like when their media isn't controlling their every thought."

We Keep Fighting Each Other and There’s No Middle Ground

This Swedish man believes that Americans bicker with each other all the time over politics – and he’s not wrong! "I mean, uh, we have a pretty bad view of America in Sweden 'cause, I think the media are pushing it,” he shares. “You know, we only see the bad stuff, it's probably not that bad. But one thing is that, I think the politics are very extreme. Not, like, extreme in that way, but everyone is fighting each other all the time. So it's like there's no middle ground in politics."

"He's right... That's all we do literally out government can never meet eye to eye which divides our citizens and whole country," one American shares.

"Well said, young man," adds another user.

Our Government Is Playing Mind Games on Us

"America, I don't really like it," one European guy says. "They're, I mean, trying to convince the people that they're something they're not. They're playing a lot of people on mind games."

The interviewer decides to change the subject. "What do you think about China?" To which the young man responds, "China, it's okay. Better than the U.S.A."

"He's right about the mind games and I'm an American," comments Tiffany.

"He is right on mind games," another user said.

Americans Are Charismatic and Have Energy

"Well some similarities to England," one British man explains. Unlike many Europeans, he recognizes the differences between the states. "One thing I'll say is that whenever I hear people speaking about America, it differs so much from state to state, it's almost like every state is its own independent country."

He adds: "If I was gonna give a generalization, I would say that there is a level of charisma and energy in America not found in many other countries."

America Is Not Safe and Is Less Free Than Other Countries

@zotworldwide asked a young man in a European city on his opinion of the U.S. "America is a very extreme place in my eyes. It's, obviously, in some ways it is superior economically. I wouldn't live there," he declares. "I think Europe is safer, it's calmer, the people here are just more reserved, and more educated, and have a better understanding of the world, 'cause they know different cultures. In America, you kind of only know America, you think America's the country of freedom and don't realize that other countries have more freedom than America does," he concludes.

@GarlicFlower on TikTok writes," As an American, I totally agree."

User Shaylin Shupe adds, "He's not wrong. We need help."

America Is Too Business-Oriented

One European girl says that she actually loves America, but that she wouldn't live there. "I've been to America when I was little, for like Florida to Universal World and DisneyLand. That was like a dream come true, I mean, I love America since then," she says. "I've been to Hawaii, Hawaii is great. But other than that I can't see myself living there, like, in the future. I feel like it's a little bit intense, too oriented on business, not a lot of culture or history behind it."

Closing Thoughts

For the most part, it seems Europeans have a pretty negative view about Americans, and, quite honestly, many U.S. citizens tend to dislike each other too. Our culture has become too hyper focused on politics and controversial opinions. What’s worse is that we tend to attack each other instead of our ideas. Hopefully, our culture will soon shift from arguing all the time to actually questioning the media and becoming kinder to each other.
