What To Wear If You’re Getting Fall Photos Done This Year

There is nothing better than taking photos in the fall, with crisp leaves and darker hues. Whether you’re taking engagement photos, family photos, or individual shots, you want to look your best (obviously).

Coordinating outfits and colors can be stressful, especially when there are a ton of people involved. It’s best to avoid overly matching outfits (circa 2010), and instead opt for a wider range of colors and styles to keep everyone looking put-together. If it’s just you and your man, hone in on masculine and feminine styles! Jeans and a button-down for him, a fall dress and boots for you!

In order to avoid the VSCO girl look from last decade, choose lengths that work together, and balance out those proportions with a wide-leg pant. And absolutely no infinity scarves! Another tip is to avoid overly tight or revealing outfits, which do not photograph well and you will probably regret by the time you get your pictures back. Flattering, but not suggestive, is the goal here. This is also not the time to try something completely outside your comfort zone! Avoid wild patterns, super oversized silhouettes, and colors that don’t work well with your skin tone. For me, it’s cool reds and purples. For you, it might be a certain shade of brown.

Colors like black, burgundy, and darker shades of gray photograph well, and are super easy to coordinate. But if you’re unsure of exactly what to wear or what colors look best, here are some great options for fall photos this year!

Consider Green

Fall tones of green are big this year, gracing everything from manicures to cozy sweaters. Green is great for pictures because it’s a little different than many of the other photos you will see this year, and the perfect shade of green is relatively easy to find! Green also looks great with black or brown boots, so it will likely work with key fall pieces you already have.

Feminine Blouse

Another go-to for photos is a pretty fall blouse and jeans. Soft, neutral colors and floral patterns, or ruffles, pair well with a good pair of jeans or even trousers if you want to spice it up. Keep your accessories simple and dainty, and match your shoes to your blouse for a put-together look!

Maxi Skirts and Dresses

A great way to add length to your body and the photos is by wearing a maxi-length dress or skirt. Especially if you plan to take photos soon, you can play off fall tones like orange and beige, while avoiding a ton of layers necessary in the colder months.

Bomber Jackets

An easy, stylish layer that adds dimension to your look is a bomber jacket. Choose a quilted or leather bomber to break up cotton or wool fabrics in your photos, which gives you the perfect fall look you will love in pictures for years to come! Bomber jackets work for casual or formal photos, and can be layered over sweaters or dresses.

Over-the-Knee Boots

If mini dresses are your year-round favorite (same!), choose a long-sleeve dress with feminine elements like floral patterns or ruffles. Add a pair of over-the-knee boots to account for the shorter length, and then add a few finishing touches! Instantly cute and fall photo appropriate.

Long Coats

Trench coats, wool coats, dad coats: Coats are a fall staple and make any outfit look more put-together. If you plan on wearing one for photos (cute!), keep the base of your outfit simple and fitted, so the oversized coat can be the star of your look.

Monochrome

Choose one fall tone, like black or brown, and keep all the base pieces the same hue. A knit dress, leather jacket, and boot of choice maintain a chic look for your next photo session, whereas an all-black top and pants stand out in a photo. Just add a few accessories and a rich fabric, like leather, to make a statement!

Shackets

Another fall favorite is the shacket! This layer looks adorable over sweaters, tanks, and jeans, and adds the perfect fall touch to your outfit. Great with light wash denim and boots, the shacket will be one of your favorite looks for photos this year!

Cowboy Boots

Whether you live in Southern California or Alabama, cowboy boots are a fun way to change up your typical fall photo look! They look super cute with flannel dresses and hats, especially if you’re taking your photos in the countryside.

Neutrals Only

If you feel that darker fall tones are overdone, try building a neutral only fit for photos this year. Soft shades of tan and cream work well together, and provide a great contrast to some of the darker fall tones. However, add some fall touches, like a cute hat and boots, to bring in some of your favorite aspects of the season with a softer approach.
