Why Justin And Hailey Bieber Waited For Marriage
Last week, Justin Bieber opened up to Vogue about his struggles with addiction, and how he was healed by his Christian Faith. The singer revealed that before his November wedding to Hailey Bieber (previously Baldwin), he had been committed to celibacy for over a year.
Justin Battled with Addictions to Drugs and Sex
Bieber is known for his bad behavior almost as much as his music. He admits that early fame gave him an inflated ego, leading him to act out to shed his teen idol image. 2013 saw a series of scandals and petty crimes, eventually resulting in Bieber’s DIU charge.
Around this time, the singer started abusing the drug Xanax. He confessed, “I found myself doing things that I was so ashamed of, being super-promiscuous and stuff, and I think I used Xanax because I was so ashamed.” Bieber used the drug to numb his feelings, and avoid facing the issues that fueled his sex addiction.

Justin Looked to God To Heal His Pain
After his downward spiral, Bieber turned to church leaders to help him detox and rediscover his faith. It was during this period that the singer decided to give up sex. Staying celibate, he realized, was a way for him to draw closer to God. He told Vogue that avoiding premarital sex would “protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain”. Bieber described how promiscuous sex can cover up low self-esteem, adding that he was staying chaste to help the condition of his soul.
“He doesn’t ask us not to have sex for him because He wants rules and stuff,” Justin explained. “He’s like, I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain. I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough. Because they lack self-worth. Women do that, and guys do that. I wanted to rededicate myself to God in that way because I really felt it was better for the condition of my soul. And I believe that God blessed me with Hailey as a result. There are perks. You get rewarded for good behavior.”

Justin and Hailey Decided To Wait for Marriage
Hailey, who was first introduced to Bieber in 2009, has been vocal about her faith on social media. She posted on Instagram, "God made us individuals for a reason, with our own beauty, our own personalities, and our own story because there's a specific plan and purpose for each and every human created, and he makes no mistakes!!”
The new Mrs. Bieber says the “common denominator” between the two was their faith. After a failed relationship years earlier, Bieber ran into his now-wife at a church conference in the summer of 2018. A month later, they were engaged. The couple resolved to stay abstinent until their courthouse wedding in November.
Justin Is Focused on Being a Good Husband
Now, Bieber says, he is focused on moral and character development. After the wedding, he decided to take a break from music to concentrate on his marriage and becoming a better man. He has stayed clean since the detox, and now only drinks socially.
The couple says it’s not always easy, but they are working hard to strengthen their marriage. Hailey says, “It’s just that I’m fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship,” Hailey clarifies. “I want people to know that. We’re coming from a really genuine place. But we’re two young people who are learning as we go. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy. It’s always going to be hard. It’s a choice.”
