A Florida woman received her bill after her doctor's appointment and was shocked to find that it added a 15% tip. The patient has provided an alleged screenshot of the bill from an Orlando-based clinic but has asked Evie to keep her name and the facility's information hidden for her safety and privacy.

The woman explained that she had to wait for her HSA card and couldn't provide immediate payment. When the facility sent her an electronic invoice, she noticed her subtotal of $1,539.22 came with an automatic tip of 15% ($230.88), bringing the order total to $1,770.10. The patient says it's like "they flipped the iPad" to her, referring to when coffee shops utilize the Square App as their payment method, often adding an automatic tip to the total bill.

The patient adds that while there was an option to deny the tip charge, it's a concern for individuals who aren't too tech-savvy. "If I was older and not familiar with it, I definitely would've just accidentally paid it, which is insane."

If the clinic does use Square or a similar app, it makes sense why there was an automatic tip added. According to a Square spokeswoman, they do not allow merchants to preselect tip amounts. However, many electronic payment apps automatically suggest a tip, which puts pressure on customers who have to opt out of it. "It's coercion," says product design veteran Ted Selker.

Evie Magazine has reached out to the clinic for comment.
