Despite identifying as "gender-fluid," Demi Lovato still wanted a traditional, masculine hunk like Henry Cavill.

Eight years ago, Demi Lovato did what can only be described as the ultimate dating strategy. In the span of 30 seconds, she followed Henry Cavill on Instagram, liked two of his posts, and then uploaded a photo of herself in a skin-tight, lacy one-piece.

It’s one of those moments that lives rent-free in pop culture memory. Although we can’t really blame Lovato—who wouldn’t shoot their shot with Superman? The most surprising part about all of this is that Lovato is very liberal, and even still, she wanted a traditional, masculine hunk.

From "They/Them" to "She/Her"

In 2021, the singer came out as nonbinary and adopted they/them pronouns. She shaved her head and went for the androgynous look. She made headlines for her unapologetic stance on "woke" social issues.

Lovato eventually pivoted back to she/her pronouns, citing exhaustion from constantly explaining her identity. "I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting," she told GQ Hype Spain. While she still feels a sense of fluidity, returning to she/her just felt easier.

What Do Women Actually Want?

Women, liberal or conservative, want masculine men. There's no getting around that. Countless liberal women on social media have admitted to gravitating towards conservative guys.  A 2023 study found that people are more likely to view muscular men as conservative. When participants were shown images of different men and asked to identify their political, social, and economic beliefs, they tended to associate physical fitness with more conservative views.

A 2023 survey conducted by a behavioral and cognitive graduate student (@datepsych on X) also found something interesting. The study asked 460 participants to rate different male archetypes—ranging from "neutral normie" to "hostile sexist"—in terms of desirability. Women, including those who identified as feminists, overwhelmingly found the "neutral normie" the most appealing, while men who embodied manosphere ideals were met with an immediate "ick."

Case in point: women tend to prefer a masculine, conservative man over a more liberal one—even Demi Lovato.
