In case you haven’t noticed (or been affected by it, lucky you), this has been an extremely cold winter across the nation. Recently, it seems that all we want to do is layer, layer, layer!

Layering is a great way to stay warm, but sometimes it feels like it comes at the expense of feeling cute and stylish. Ditch some of the bulkier items (unless absolutely necessary) to avoid looking androgynous and focus more on layering specific pieces that add to your look, rather than take away from it. We’ve all had that great outfit that was ruined by the addition of a bulky jacket!

The basic formula for layering in the winter is base layer + mid-layer + outer layer, and each layer serves a purpose to keep you warm and protected from the elements. In super chilly weather, you’ll need each of these three layers, which can add bulk and take away from your feminine shape if not done correctly. You’ll need to be purposeful about what pieces and fabrics you’re layering.

Sometimes, especially as the temperature continues to drop, it can be easy to simply throw on all of your warmest pieces and walk out the door, placing comfort over style. But obviously, you can do better than that! If layering seems like a daunting and time-consuming task, we can help you have your best feminine style while still dressing for the weather.

Okay, let's get into the basics of layering!

Layering Must-Haves

Before we discuss how to actually style the many layers of winter wear, it would be best to make sure you have the necessary items in your closet. Bodysuits are the most versatile piece of layering you can have, so you’ll want to update your wardrobe with some basics. This Abercrombie seamless long-sleeve bodysuit ($50) feels like butter, and makes the perfect base layer for the rest of your outfit. It also comes in a wide variety of colors and neutrals, so stock up on this one in multiple colors!

The sole purpose of the mid-layer is to keep you insulated and warm from the elements. In most cases, this means sweaters that can be layered over your bodysuit. Lucky for us, sweaters are super feminine! Their soft feel and general sweetness are perfect for a feminine winter look. A chunky knit sweater is a great option, due to its oversized fit and cozy knit material. This one from Anthropologie ($128) is simple and cute, as it won’t distract from the rest of your look. Or this turtleneck sweater from Abercrombie ($70)! Turtleneck sweaters offer extra warmth and will layer beautifully over your base layer.

And then the outer layer. This layer protects you from the elements, such as wind and rain. You’ll want a thick jacket or winter coat to layer over your look, depending on the weather where you are. To avoid the general outdoorsy look when adding this final layer, stick to a classic shape and silhouette. Avoid athletic brands and lightweight down jackets for this outer layer. One of our favorite pieces is a wool blend dad coat. Pick up one in a neutral color to maximize potential in your closet, and then consider a fun color or pattern to spice things up. This coat from Abercrombie ($220) is affordable, long-lasting, and versatile!

Fitted Base Layer

One of the best ways to layer your clothing is to start with only fitted pieces. Your first layer, also known as the base layer, of clothing should be as fitted as possible to keep you warm and be the foundation of the rest of your look. Bodysuits are a great base layer because they are fitted and comfortable, and if you buy them in neutral tones, they can go with any outfit! You can layer a bodysuit under a sweater, jacket, or even a dress.

Keep It Neutral

Feminine layering is also easier in neutral tones! You can easily layer in neutral tones of beige, white, and black, as each layer of your look will go together and create a cohesive (and warm!) outfit. Bright and bold colors tend to be more difficult to layer, so starting with neutrals is an easy way to get the hang of feminine layering. Once you’ve mastered the neutrals, you can start to incorporate brighter shades and patterns!

This outfit is Parisian chic meets chilly weather. Absolute perfection!

Add Winter Accessories

To avoid bulk in the winter, keep warm with winter accessories instead. The colorful Anthropologie scarf ($395), admittedly an investment piece, has been all over social media in recent weeks because it is adorable! Alternatively, if you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, this striped pastel scarf by Lucky Brand ($15) is gorgeous too. This piece is a great option to layer over sweaters and bodysuits, while adding a pop of color to your outfit!

A colorful beanie is another cute way to incorporate warmth into your accessories. Or try a sherpa bucket hat for instant cozy vibes!

Footwear

Yes, it’s cold. Boots are the most obvious choice when it comes to winter footwear. A thick pair of socks is a necessity because they easily tuck into your boots and keep your feet warm. Boots are the perfect addition to the rest of your outfit, especially with a long coat, and can often be the statement piece of your whole look.

And as long as it’s not raining, a pair of Ugg Minis are the perfect winter shoe. Lined and fuzzy, these boots are super cute, in style, and will keep you warm all winter long.
